Wright Brothers National Memorial

Pioneer aeronautical engineers Orville and Wilbur Wright developed the first practical airplanes in 1903--and transformed the world with their first flight here. Among the dunes of Kitty Hawk, you can see the original campsite, hanger, workroom, and takeoff points. Full scale reproductions of the 1902 glider and the 1903 flyer are also on view.

Fun Fact:Orville and Wilbur Wright didn’t fly between 1907 and 1910 because they were waiting for a contract from the US Army and didn’t want to expose their secrets to competing inventors.
