USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park

The heavy, concentrated loads in the form of gun turrets, the protective armor, and other factors, including all the internal and external equipment, make warship design an engineering specialty in itself. The South Dakota Class battleship USS Alabama and the GATO Class submarine USS Drum are the main attractions of this 155-acre memorial park. The battleship's decks, turrets, mess, berth compartments, bridge, wardroom and captain's cabin are open for tours, as are the USS Drum's torpedo rooms and the crew's quarters. Also on display are a B-52 bomber, WW II fighter planes, an A-12 Blackbird spy plane, and a captured Iraqi tank.

Fun Fact:The USS Alabama, in addition to its service during WW II, played a part in the 1992 movie Under Siege, in which Steven Seagal played tiger-and-mouse with thugs plotting to steal nuclear arms from a Navy battleship. Although the film was set aboard the USS Missouri, all the interior sequences were filmed aboard the Alabama.
