Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
The fancy word for candy is "confection," which interestingly also refers to a piece of fine craftsmanship. The U.S. imported most of its fine candy until the late 19th century, when sugar became increasingly abundant and automation of candy-making had to be found. Engineers stepped in by developing the machinery and manufacturing techniques. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Inc., founded in 1981, was originally located in an 800-sq.-ft. space above a bakery in Durango. Today, the company's worldwide headquarters occupies a 53,000-square-foot office and manufacturing facility that produces more than 2 million pounds of candy each year.
