Mount Washington Auto Road at Great Glen

Celebrating its 140th anniversary, the N.E.’s highest peak will captivate you with its remarkable views of the Presidential range, the White Mountain National Forest and beyond--all thanks to the unprecedented engineering achievement of this “road to the sky.” The views and the magic of this mountain sanctuary have remained largely unchanged since travelers began winding their way up the Mt. Washington Carriage Road in 1861. Now called the Auto Road, this mostly paved twister offers the challenge of a 12% average climbing grade and reaches more than a mile high up the mountain. Some consider this road the first man-made attraction in the U.S.
